A Downtown Westerly Ghost Tour

The belief in the existence of ghosts is widespread and dates back to the beginning of society. Ghosts are the spirits of the dead. They’re generally described as solitary human-like essences though stories of ghostly armies and the ghosts of animals have also been recounted – Westerly Ghost Tour.

They are believed to haunt particular locations, objects, or people they were associated with in life. According to a 2009 study by the Pew Research Center eighteen percent of Americans say they have seen a ghost. You might be surprised to learn that Westerly has many ghostly legends.

As night falls over downtown Westerly a cloaked figure can be seen walking the streets and carrying a lantern. Like a ghostly apparition from the past Courtney McInvale Reardon, the founder of Seaside Shadow Haunted History Tours, is leading the first downtown Westerly ghost tour of the season. Westerly News went along to see what it was all about.

“I grew up in a house that was incredibly haunted,” said Courtney. “Afterward I was fascinated with what had happened there and I fell in love with the study of history. I realized that history had a lot of cool legends and lore that explained the supernatural. So I started telling the stories of history and mystery to other folks.”

Our Fearless Leader

A Connecticut native, Courtney spent five years in DC after completing her studies at the Catholic University of America and the University College Dublin. After earning her degree, she worked for the FBI as an analyst and spent two years in Vermont working for the Department of Homeland Security – honing her investigative skills.

Courtney grew up in East Hampton, Connecticut where numerous paranormal occurrences took place. The events were so extreme that the Warren family came to investigate and exorcise the house during her teenage years there.

Courtney is an empathic spirit medium and utilizes her ability to connect with spirit in writing her books. She has frequently had experiences involving the paranormal. Due to her haunting past – and her ability to see and communicate with spirits – she has now put her sensitivities, investigative skills, and love of history and writing to work giving the Haunted History Ghost Tours.

Courtney is the author of three books including Haunted Mystic, Revolutionary War Ghosts of Connecticut, and Civil War Ghosts of Connecticut. She has also been featured as a historian and medium on the Travel Channel’s Portals to Hell and as a medium on the Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures. We couldn’t have asked for a more experienced guide for the tour.

You might not think Westerly is a likely place for a supernatural tour but, in fact, the town has many tales and legends. Courtney is a good story teller and her deep understanding of local history included many interesting local legends.

Some of the legends included the story of the Devil’s visit to Westerly, deadly shipwrecks, cursed pirate treasure (which may lie under the downtown post office), the Witches of Westerly, and a man from the Granite Theatre Church with two souls. According to Courtney the Granite Theatre is one of the most haunted places in town.

  1. When and where are the westerly ghost tours

  2. Holy Christmas Greg that was fascinating! I had no idea that we had ghost tours in Westerly and in Mystic.. I myself am a believer in the ghostly world and I’ve experienced it hands on. It totally makes sense now because Mystic is where I grew up. I grew up in a house steps away to downtown Mystic and it definitely was haunted.. Let me clarify, it was haunted in a good way.. Meaning the Ghost came in peace.. We didn’t need an exorcism we just needed to understand who it was from the past and what happened and we all had a mutual understanding that we all come in peace.. My father who just recently passed and might I add was an amazing person, he was an engineer and did not believe in the spirit world or the ghostly world until…. that is, the day we step foot into our house in Mystic.. In any event, it led to him researching finding out the history of the house and that there was a young girl that lived in that house and died in the street in front of the house.. So understanding all of this, helped us all, to get along in a harmonious way, again we all “came in peace”.. So thank you so much for enlightening me and informing of the Pew Research, and this amazing woman who also enlightened us. I am going to definitely be getting her Haunted Mystic book and can’t wait to read it. Thank you for an amazing story..P.S. Now that my father has crossed over, I am waiting to connect with him as well..

  3. Thanks Christine, your house should be on the tour. Greg
